Shybits - "What's That"
Set to release in November 2024, Shybits’ sophomore album "What's That" marks a compelling progression for the Berlin-based trio. Consisting of Liam (UK), Piero (Italy), and Megan (South Africa), Shybits have, since their emergence in 2018, captured hearts with their distinctive blend of post-punk and 90s alt-rock
influences. Following their debut EP "Idiot Like You" and the well-received album "Body Lotion" (2022), they now return with a sound that delves deeper into
personal narratives and emotional landscapes.
In crafting "What's That," Shybits adopted a more autobiographical approach, showcasing a raw and poignant reflection of their musical journey. Collaborating
with producer Fabio Buemi, the band strived for a multifaceted sound that resonates with their artistic growth and the dynamics within the group. This
collaborative effort enriches the album, as it harnesses the sentiments of nostalgia while curiously exploring a colder 80s aesthetic.
The album is imbued with cinematic qualities, inviting listeners on a nostalgic journey echoing elements of both the 80s and 90s, without losing the essence that defines Shybits. The soundscape is more layered, weaving in layers of emotion that mirror the complexity of relationships and personal growth. Each track offers a unique perspective, showcasing the band's versatility and willingness to experiment with different styles, perspectives and emotions.
Singles like "HAZE" and "Summer Tide" illustrate this dynamic.
"HAZE" emerges as an ethereal piece that captures the essence of melancholia and introspection. Critics have praised its shimmering production intertwined with haunting vocals—a representative of Shybits' desire to convey emotions and nostalgia through their music. This track invites listeners to lose themselves in its sound, creating a dreamy atmosphere that encapsulates vulnerability and depth.
In contrast, "Summer Tide" serves as a lively antidote. Infused with upbeat tempos and resplendent summer vibes, this track highlights the group's knack for
combining introspective lyrics with infectious melodies. It's a celebration of fleeting moments, reminding listeners to cherish connections and the joyous instances found in the warmth of summer. This juxtaposition reflects Shybits’ range, transitioning from the somber to the spirited. Summer tide is also a tribute also to all 3 members growing up respectively next to the ocean.
"What's That" as a whole provides a rich tapestry of sound and lyricism, marking a significant step forward for Shybits. The album resonates with themes of love, identity, and the human experience, making it relatable and compelling. Shybits have proven their ability to not only craft catchy tunes but also to create a powerful emotional connection with their audience.
As they prepare to embark on a Germany wide tour following the album's release, fans can anticipate the opportunity to experience Shybits’ energetic performances live.
With "What's That," they’ve created an album that not only solidifies their status in the contemporary music scene but also opens doors to further exploration and artistic expression.
In conclusion, "What's That" is poised to be a significant album that encapsulates growth, introspection, and a unique blend of influences that can only come from Shybits. If their recent singles are any indication, this album will undoubtedly resonate with both long-time followers and new listeners alike, inviting all to
