For newcomers and latecomers alike, there has been no handier introduction to London-born singer-songwriter Matilda Mann than her recent double singles: sultry pop track ‘Meet Cute’ and the delicate folk offering ‘Tell Me That I’m Wrong.’ These songs, marking her first new music of 2024, excitedly hinted at the promise of a much-anticipated body of work to come.
Today, Matilda Mann fans can rejoice in the exciting news of her debut album, ‘Roxwell’, arriving on 28th February through 7476 (pinkpirate, Hohnen Ford, Lexie Carroll, Matt Maltese). This announcement is beautifully underscored by Mann’s latest single, the punk-infused anthem ‘Say It Back’.
Capturing unrequited love’s painful chase, ‘Say It Back’ sits as a cornerstone of Mann’s forthcoming 14-track body of work showcasing her innate gift to distill human experiences with folk intimacy framed by pop sensibilities. Reflecting on her new single she describes “Say it back is that frustrating confusion of why, if you love someone so much and do everything you can, do they still not love you back? Unrequited love hurts the most because there’s that feeling of “the chase” and it never being reciprocated. Are you just not their type? Smart enough? Cool enough? It can make you overthink so much you’d do crazy things for them.”
From the lyrics penciled in her diary to playing demos on the kitchen speaker, her forthcoming debut album is a living, breathing portrayal of Matilda Mann. Through the years, ‘Roxwell’ has been her constant and has seen the twist and turns of the bittersweet transition to adulthood. This first full-length record is an intimate portrayal – capturing love in its myriad forms. The tracks are as varied as their subjects, but tying it all together are Mann’s classic lyrics – witty, wise and leaving you wondering what else she meant.
Speaking about her debut album, Mann shares her excitement: “This is my debut album. Every song feels like a part of me, and I’m so, so excited that it’s finally coming out. It explores various types of love, the experience of growing up and reflecting on the past, the struggle of not being able to give someone your all, getting stuck in the past, and accepting what you can’t change.”
Expanding further, she adds: “It’s everything I want to say and more. Some songs were written almost subconsciously and only came to light when I needed to truly acknowledge my feelings. It’s terrifying to put it out into the world, but I’m also incredibly proud of it and grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.”
Matilda Mann’s still-young career in music has seen her garner support across the airwaves, including a playlist addition and Hottest Record accolade on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 2 spins, as well as plays in the US from the likes of KCRW and NPR. She counts DIY, DORK, Clash, NME, The Line of Best Fit, COLORS, Independent, Notion and Evening Standard amongst her growing repertoire of press supporters, and has shared stages as support to Laufey at The Royal Albert Hall, The Staves, Holly Humberstone, Arlo Parks, Beabadoobee and more. Matilda has sold out headline London shows at Jazz Cafe, Lafayette and EartH, and has performed on the Park Stage at Glastonbury Festival. She recently featured on Bombay Bicycle Club’s single ‘Fantasneeze’ and has collaborated with the US-based alt-pop artist Spill Tab.
Matilda will be supporting Wallows on tour across the UK & Europe this October, culminating in a performance at London’s Alexandra Palace. All live shows are listed below, with more to be announced soon.
